Civil War: This Day In History

February 11-16, 1862:  General Grant attacks Fort Donelson with troops and naval support on the Cumberland River.  On February 14, U.S. Navy gunboats attempted to reduce the fort with naval gunfire, but were forced to withdraw after sustaining heavy damage from Donelson's water batteries.  Eventually, the fort surrendered to Grant.
