 History is here for you.

We are the center for Chesterfield history.  Our mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and promote the unique history of our community for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations.  You can be part of that.

As the location for the 2nd permanent settlement in the New World, Chesterfield County is proud of our heritage! Rich in over 400 years of history, Chesterfield County's landscape is dotted with historic structures and places. Some are owned by private parties and some are open to visit. Most that have survived have been restored in some fashion to their original state and can be seen from the roadways that intertwine the county.   

Experience colonial history by visiting the historic Courthouse Green.  The 1892 Jail and museum are open for visitors to experience life in Chesterfield’s earlier days. Our beautiful plantation home, Magnolia Grange, interprets life in the 18th and 19th centuries.  Soon we hope to add another location, Point of Rocks in Matoacca. 

Visitors can tour Civil War sites throughout the County and learn about one of the longest lasting campaigns of the war. Explore the “firsts” that the county has to offer, from commercial coal mining and railroads to the first ironworks and the first incorporated town in North America.
